Honeydew melon: a watery fruit whose health trials tested a capsule

The longest trial on this page did not test the fruit. It tested a 10 mg daily capsule of a patented melon concentrate rich in the enzyme SOD. In 61 adults aged 29 to 60 it lowered perceived stress by 8.8% at day 28 and 7.2% at day 84 against placebo, in a study funded by the maker of the extract. The EU register lists the antioxidant and immune claims for that extract as non-authorized, which is a refusal to approve the wording and says nothing either way about fresh melon. The fruit itself is mostly water with a modest dose of vitamin C. The US food survey gives raw honeydew 18 mg of vitamin C, 228 mg of potassium and 36 calories per 3.5 oz (100 g), and a cup of 5.5 oz (155 g) carries 27.9 mg of vitamin C. That is a single value with no spread between samples, and ripeness and variety are not stated.

The bottom line

In 30 people who form kidney stones and have low urinary citrate, a single 13 fl oz (385 mL) glass of fresh melon juice raised urinary citrate about as much as orange juice did. Only melon and orange juice also raised urinary potassium and pH. Each juice had 10 people, urine was followed for 6 hours, the melon variety was not named, and nobody counted new stones. The cautions on this page are real ones. Of 53 Spanish adults who said melon gave them reactions, double-blind food challenges confirmed allergy in 19 (36%). Most had an itchy mouth and throat, and two had life-threatening reactions. Among 222 adults with hay fever in Ankara, 14% reported food reactions linked to pollen, and melon was one of the five foods named most often, by self-report. The rind is where the germs sit. In 2007 a Salmonella outbreak of 30 cases at one hotel restaurant was most likely traced to honeydew in a fruit salad, contaminated by a sick food handler. In Canadian shops fresh-cut melon was among the pre-cut fruits more likely to carry Listeria, though the survey does not give a figure for melon alone. FDA counts pregnant women and their unborn or newborn babies, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems as the high-risk groups for serious effects of listeriosis. CDC Listeria advice for melon is to avoid cut melon left out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F, and cut melon kept in the refrigerator for more than a week, and to choose melon that has just been cut. FDA advises scrubbing the rind with a clean produce brush before cutting, buying pre-cut melon only if it is refrigerated or surrounded by ice, and keeping cut melon in a refrigerator at 40°F or below. In an open trial in Iran, 53 young adults ate 8.8 oz (250 g) of melon a day for 15 days. Red cell cholinesterase was 5.86 IU/mL with organic melon against 5.11 with market melon sprayed with the pesticide diazinon, and what that means for health was not measured. We found no study of honeydew itself in pregnancy, in children, in kidney disease or with medicines. That gap is not a sign of safety, and in pregnancy the Listeria advice above is the one that applies.
