Bioma Learn

Foods, nutrients and the evidence behind them, from primary sources only: USDA FoodData Central for data, FDA for Daily Values, NIH and the trials it cites for claims. Both sides of every nutrient, including what supplements were tested for and failed to do.

Foods — 1000 foods across 23 categories: calories, macronutrients and % Daily Value for 30 vitamins and minerals, per 100 g and per typical portion.

Nutrients — 23 vitamins and minerals: the FDA Daily Value and the foods that actually deliver it in a realistic serving.

Foods by name — 366 foods as people name them rather than as USDA catalogues them: what the research says about composition, absorption, cooking, safety and what is still unknown.

Guides — 23 evidence-graded guides: what a nutrient does, how much you need, what too much does, and what randomised trials found. Every statement carries its source and its level of evidence.

Answers — 121 short answers, each from USDA data or a quoted primary source.

Evidence reviews — deep reviews of single questions, read from the randomised trials and meta-analyses themselves rather than from a summary, with the search protocol shown. Six so far: do vitamin D supplements prevent fractures?, does iron in pregnancy help?, do calcium supplements harm your heart?, does magnesium help you sleep?, do zinc or vitamin C shorten a cold? and does folic acid before pregnancy prevent birth defects?
