How much dark chocolate per day is too much?

About 2.8 ounces a day reach the Dietary Guidelines ceiling for saturated fat (10% of calories, about 20 g on 2,000 calories): one ounce (1 oz, 28 g) carries 6.9 g in the USDA record.

What eating it daily did in studies

Only studies that give the amount eaten. Levels: A is a meta-analysis of trials, B a randomized trial, C an observational study. How we grade evidence.

Reasons to keep it moderate, and who should eat less

If you have kidney disease, take blood thinners or other medicines, or are pregnant, the right amount for you is a question for your clinician.

What this means for a normal day

Saturated fat is the first limit. One ounce of 70 to 85% dark chocolate carries 6.9 g, about a third of the roughly 20 g ceiling on 2,000 calories, and 170 calories.

A larger daily amount has been tested for the brain without a result. In 100 adults aged 65 to 75, 1.8 oz (50 g) a day of high-flavanol dark chocolate for 8 weeks did not improve cognition compared with low-flavanol chocolate (Level B).

Testing of 72 US dark chocolate and cocoa products found 43% above California Prop 65 daily limits for lead and 35% for cadmium, though 70 of 72 were under the FDA lead reference level (Level D). If you have a milk allergy, note that some dark chocolates contain undeclared milk (Level D).
