Phosphorus: almost nobody is short of it, and the real question is your kidneys
Phosphorus is in bones, teeth and every strand of DNA, and it is in almost everything people eat. Deficiency from diet is close to unheard of in healthy adults, which makes this one of the few nutrient pages where the interesting question is the opposite one.
Every statement on this page is tied to a source. The badge shows what kind of evidence stands behind it. Evidence A is a meta-analysis or systematic review. E is the position of an expert body without its own analysis. Click "source" for the exact sentence we took it from. How we verify →

What the evidence does and does not show

What too much does
- Very high phosphorus intakes over short periods can cause hyperphosphataemia. — general adults Evidence E source
- Five days of extra phosphate raised blood phosphate in healthy young men with normal kidneys, and the trialists called that a possible health risk. — healthy young men with normal renal function, Switzerland Evidence B source
- The same trial handed out 750 mg of phosphorus a day in capsules on top of a controlled diet, which is the size of dose an ordinary processed diet can carry. — healthy young men with normal renal function Evidence B source
- Europe set its first safety ceiling for phosphate additives in 2019 and said children already reach it on an average diet. — European population, all age groups, exposure from phosphate food additives Evidence E source
Medicines it interacts with
- Aluminium-hydroxide antacids bind phosphorus in the gut, and using them for three months or longer can drive phosphorus too low. — chronic users of aluminium-hydroxide antacids Evidence E source
- The cholestyramine label warns that phosphate supplements may be absorbed less well, and it bases that warning on a different drug of the same class. — people taking bile acid binding resins Evidence E source
The gap between what you need and the safe ceiling is 6× here. Food alone rarely reaches the ceiling. Supplements are where people pass it. Values from cards phos-02 / phos-03 below.
What to do with this
For a healthy adult eating normally, there is nothing to do here. Phosphorus is in dairy, meat, fish, nuts, legumes and most processed food, and deficiency from diet alone is close to unheard of.
Two situations change that. Long-term use of aluminium-hydroxide antacids binds phosphorus in the gut, and three months or more of it can drive levels too low. And someone who has been severely malnourished can crash within days of being fed again, which is why refeeding is done under supervision rather than at home.
If you have chronic kidney disease, the whole page reverses and your target comes from your own clinician. Worth knowing that even there the evidence is thinner than the advice suggests. The 2025 Cochrane review of phosphate binders covers 134 trials and 20,913 people, and most of what it found sits at low or very low certainty. The clearest signal is a comparison between two treatments rather than against none: on dialysis, sevelamer beat calcium-based binders on deaths from any cause.
If you have a reason to hold phosphorus down
Most of what gets written about gentle cooking does not apply here. Heat cannot destroy a mineral. In the American retention table phosphorus sits at 100 per cent for 155 of 269 methods and the median is 100 per cent. There is one exception and it is useful. Every row that drops to 65 per cent, all 23 of them, is meat braised, simmered or browned and then served without the drippings. The phosphorus went into the liquid and the liquid went down the sink. If you have been told to keep phosphorus low, that is a real kitchen lever worth about a third.
The harder part is the phosphorus you cannot see. A Finnish survey found added phosphates declared on one processed food in three, and European law makes the manufacturer name the additive without saying how much went in. No laboratory can separate the phosphorus that was always in a food from the phosphorus a factory added, so every composition table reports one merged total. That matters because the sources are not absorbed alike. Plant phosphorus is taken up worst, animal phosphorus better, and factory phosphate best of all.
Two findings put a shape on the risk for everyone else. In healthy young men with normal kidneys, five days of an extra 750 mg a day raised serum phosphate from 0.87 to 1.00 mmol per litre and nearly doubled urinary phosphate, and the trialists called that a possible health risk. That dose is the size an ordinary processed diet can carry. Separately, Europe set its first safety ceiling for phosphate additives in 2019, 40 mg per kilogram of body weight a day, and estimated that infants, toddlers and children already reach it on average consumption. Read that ceiling for what it is. It governs the additive rather than the nutrient, and putting it beside the 700 mg recommendation compares two different kinds of number.
Not for everyone. If you take cholestyramine or another bile acid binding resin and also take a phosphate supplement, the label says the supplement may be absorbed less well. Read the warning as narrowly as it is written. It rests on an observation made with a different drug of the same class, and it is a reason to ask a pharmacist about timing rather than to stop anything.

The bottom line
The requirement is 700 mg a day and the upper limit is 4,000 mg for adults up to 50. Food gets you there without effort, and low blood phosphorus in practice comes from illness, refeeding after starvation, or long-term use of aluminium-containing antacids rather than from a poor diet. For people with chronic kidney disease the calculation reverses, and even there the evidence is weaker than the advice sounds. A 2025 Cochrane review of 134 trials in 20,913 adults found phosphate binders brought no clear benefit for cardiovascular death or artery calcium against placebo, although on dialysis sevelamer came out ahead of calcium-based binders on deaths. Three things have landed since this page was written and they move the question rather than answer it. What Americans actually eat sits far above the figure on the label, a median of 1,150 mg a day against a recommended 700, so the page most people need is rarely the one about getting enough. Europe publishes 550 mg as an Adequate Intake and says openly that the balance studies needed to calculate a real requirement do not exist. And the two regulators disagree about what phosphorus may be advertised for. The European Union authorises six claims, including one that phosphorus helps maintain normal bones, and it refused a claim that topping up phosphorus with other micronutrients relieves tiredness. American law mentions phosphorus in its health claim rules exactly once, and there it is a restriction: a product carrying the calcium and osteoporosis claim may not hold more phosphorus than calcium. Same mineral, same bone, opposite decisions. Anyone quoting a register has to say which register.
