Drink mix: a powder that is almost all carbohydrate
The firmest evidence on drink mix powders is two small randomized trials. In 14 healthy adults, a mix made with a slowly digestible carbohydrate had a glycemic index of 30.3 against 41.5 for a control mix, in one single-blind study sponsored by the maker of that ingredient. The result describes that ingredient rather than drink mixes in general. Stirred into skim milk, the same mix cut the two-hour blood sugar area by 32 percent against the control mix. In a pilot trial in 32 adults with seasonal affective disorder, a carbohydrate-rich drink mix gave 71 percent remission over 21 days, the same rate as the protein drink it was compared with, so it does not show that the carbohydrate itself helped. The one US reference record for a powder, an orange Gatorade, lists 94.11 g of carbohydrate per 3.5 oz (100 g) of powder. There is no second sample to show how much brands differ.
Every statement here is tied to a source. The badge says what kind of evidence stands behind it: A is a meta-analysis or systematic review, E is the position of an expert body without its own analysis. How we verify →
We have no USDA entry for drink mix itself in this cohort. The evidence below stands on published studies rather than on a composition table, and we would rather say that than show you a number for something else.
How much is actually in it
- In a 2014 survey of one US grocery store, 89.7% of drink mixes and powders marketed to children contained artificial food colors. — 810 products marketed to children, one North Carolina grocery store, 2014 (n = 810) Evidence C sourceDrink mixes/powders 89.7% with AFCs; all products 43.2%
What your body absorbs
- Mixed into skim milk, the slowly digestible carbohydrate drink mix cut the 2-hour blood glucose area by 32% compared with the control drink mix. — healthy adults, 50 g available carbohydrate per test drink (n = 14) Evidence B sourceGI -27%; iAUC (0-2 h) -32% vs control drink mix in skim milk
What it does to your health
- In a randomized crossover trial in 14 healthy adults, a drink mix made with slowly digestible carbohydrate had a glycemic index of 30.3 versus 41.5 for the control drink mix. — healthy adults (n = 14) Evidence B sourceGI 30.3 vs 41.5 (control drink mix), about 27% lower; dextrose reference 100
- In a randomized trial in 32 adults with seasonal affective disorder, a carbohydrate-rich drink mix gave 71% remission, the same as the protein-rich comparison drink, over 21 days. — 32 subjects (63% women; mean age 46 +/- 14 years) with SCID-diagnosed SAD (n = 32) Evidence B sourceResponse 71% (CHO) vs 76% (PRO); remission 71% in each group; no difference
Safety, limits and interactions
- FDA revoked authorization of the color FD&C Red No. 3 in January 2025, giving food makers until January 15, 2027 to reformulate. — US food supply (n = -) Evidence E sourceAuthorization revoked under the Delaney Clause; food deadline January 15, 2027
What people believe that the data does not support
- The EU authorizes the claim that carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions enhance water absorption during physical exercise. — EU label claim for carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions (n = -) Evidence E sourceAuthorized; conditions of use in Regulation (EU) 432/2012
- The EU also authorizes the claim that carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions help maintain endurance performance during prolonged endurance exercise. — EU label claim for carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions (n = -) Evidence E sourceAuthorized; applies to prolonged endurance exercise only
Who this works differently for
- Observational data link regular soft drink use before age 3, including powdered drink mixes, with the lowest diet quality trajectory in US children. — 349 children followed from age 3 to 7, Cincinnati, OH (n = 349) Evidence C sourceLowest HEI-2005 trajectory group more likely regular soft drink consumers before age 3; size not stated in abstract
- In a Brazilian cohort, a snack pattern that included chocolate drink mix was associated with higher birth weight in pregnant adolescents. — 1,298 pregnant women, Petropolis and Queimados, Brazil, 2007-2008 (n = 1298) Evidence C sourceBeta = 56.64 g; p = 0.04, adolescents only
What is still unknown
- The only USDA reference record for a drink mix powder lists 94.11 g carbohydrate and 0.802 mg riboflavin per 3.5 oz (100 g), with no sample range. — USDA SR Legacy FDC 173659, Beverages, drink mix, QUAKER OATS, GATORADE, orange flavor, powder (n = -) Evidence E sourcePer 100 g powder: carbohydrate 94.11 g, riboflavin 0.802 mg, copper 0.25 mg; Foundation samples 0; no CoFID equivalent
The bottom line
If you buy a drink mix for a child, read the color line on the label. In one North Carolina grocery store in 2014, 89.7 percent of drink mixes and powders marketed to children listed artificial food colors, against 43.2 percent of all child-targeted products there, a count taken from labels in a single shop. The FDA revoked the color FD&C Red No. 3 in January 2025 and gave food makers until 15 January 2027 to reformulate. That matters for a powder only if its label lists Red No. 3. In a Cincinnati cohort of 349 children followed from age 3 to 7, regular soft drinks before age 3 were linked to the lowest diet quality path. The study counted powdered mixes together with soda and sports drinks, and the abstract gives no size for the link. The safety heading on this page holds only that color decision. We found no study testing the safety of a drink mix itself, and no card on allergy or medicines. A Brazilian cohort of 1,298 pregnant women linked a snack pattern that included chocolate drink mix with birth weight 56.64 g higher, in adolescents only (p = 0.04). That is an association with the whole snack pattern, not evidence that the mix itself changes birth weight. The EU allows two label claims for carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions. They enhance water absorption during physical exercise, and they help maintain endurance performance during prolonged endurance exercise. Those claims belong to sports mixes built to that formula. A plain fruit-flavored powder without electrolytes is outside them. We have no data on how much brands vary in composition or on what mixing and storage change.
