Kiwifruit: the fruit moved the bowel, the capsule did not

Kiwifruit is the rare case where the fruit holds an approved European health claim and the supplement made from it does nothing. Green kiwifruit of the Hayward variety carries an authorised EU claim for contributing to normal bowel function by increasing stool frequency, one of 262 authorised entries in a register that has refused 2 067. Pooling seven kiwifruit trials against psyllium, the fruit added about a third of a bowel movement a week, which says it is at least as good as the fibre supplement people already buy for this. Then the British Dietetic Association pooled three trials of kiwifruit in capsule and sachet form, 135 people with chronic constipation, and found nothing at all. Stool frequency moved 0.24 bowel movements a week with a confidence interval running from minus 0.32 to 0.80, and consistency did not move either. Whatever works in this fruit did not survive being put into a capsule, and nobody has compared fruit against supplement head to head. How much kiwifruit a day the pooled trials used, we cannot tell you. The European authorisation is tied to conditions of use that are not in our snapshot, and the EFSA page returned an error when we went for them. The two a day further down this page comes from a vitamin C trial and has nothing to do with the bowel evidence.

Every statement here is tied to a source. The badge says what kind of evidence stands behind it: A is a meta-analysis or systematic review, E is the position of an expert body without its own analysis. How we verify →

We have no USDA entry for kiwi fruit itself in this cohort. The evidence below stands on published studies rather than on a composition table, and we would rather say that than show you a number for something else.

The bottom line

Eat it with a starchy meal if you want the one effect here that has a mechanism behind it. Nine people ate a wheat biscuit carrying the sugar of two kiwifruit, supplied five different ways, and whole kiwifruit pulp almost halved the height of the glucose rise and cut the area under the curve at the 30-minute peak by half. A carbon tracer in the meal showed the reason: the gut absorbed it more slowly. Nine people and one laboratory breakfast, so take the direction and leave the decimal places. The digestive enzyme in green kiwifruit is sold harder than the evidence carries. Twelve older adults ate green kiwifruit, which contains the protease actinidin, or gold kiwifruit, which does not, alongside 100 g of beef. Amino acids reached the blood faster after the green fruit. The total amount absorbed was identical, and no measure of protein turnover budged. Faster is not more, and enzyme marketing lives in exactly that gap. Two kiwifruit a day cut fatigue in 167 young adults within two weeks. Every one of them entered the trial with blood vitamin C under 40 micromoles per litre, and a plain 250 mg tablet did nearly as well. The outcomes were self-reported in a study nobody could blind, because one group could see it was eating fruit. Nothing there says a person with normal vitamin C would feel a thing. Allergy is where to be careful, and the usual shortcut fails. Of 20 children with a history of immediate reactions to fresh kiwifruit, 19 reacted on challenge, and five still reacted to a skin test with kiwifruit steamed for five minutes at 100 degrees. None reacted to one industrially homogenised preparation. That is 20 children and one specific product, so it is a reason to ask an allergist, and no reason to test anything at your own table. One thing to hold about the bowel evidence while reading anyone else on it. The authors of the 2024 pooled analysis call the evidence base scarce, and the kiwifruit trials inside it are the ones most often funded by the industry that sells the fruit.

Hayward green kiwifruit consumption with beef resulted in a more rapid increase in peripheral plasma essential amino acid concentrations. There were significant time by kiwifruit intake interactions for plasma concentrations of EAAs, branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), and leucine (P < 0.01). However, there was no difference in the total amount of EAAs absorbed.
