Banana bread: closer to cake than to bread
Banana bread carries the name of bread and the numbers of cake. The UK food table puts a homemade loaf at 331 calories, 36.3 g total sugars, 12.4 g fat and 1.4 g fiber per 3.5 oz (100 g), from a single recipe. The closest trial evidence is about bread in general. A meta-analysis of 9 longer controlled trials, some of them not randomized, found bread reformulated with extra fiber lowered LDL cholesterol by 6.2 mg/dL (95% CI 1.5 to 10; metric: 0.16 mmol/L, 0.04 to 0.27) and fasting glucose by 4 mg/dL (0.22 mmol/L) against control. None of those breads was banana bread. USDA has one recipe-based record, made with margarine, at 54.6 g carbohydrate per 3.5 oz (100 g), which agrees with the UK figure of 53.9 g. The two tables disagree on riboflavin, 0.2 against 0.07 mg, so treat the vitamin numbers as belonging to one recipe. US survey data have no separate code or portion for banana bread.

What a real portion looks like
- According to a USDA dietary data brief, sweet bakery products, candy and desserts supplied 7% of US dietary fiber intake, while bananas were among the top fruit contributors. — US population, WWEIA NHANES 2009-2010 Evidence E sourceSweet bakery products, candy and other desserts 7% of fiber intake; apples and bananas the highest fruit contributors
What your body absorbs
- In a single-blind crossover trial, banana bread made with whole yellow pea flour produced a blood glucose response of 97.9 mmol x min/L, less than half of the 218.1 seen with white bread. — Adults in a single-blind crossover feeding trial, Canada Evidence B sourceGlucose iAUC 97.9 ± 17.8 (pea flour banana bread) vs 218.1 ± 29.5 mmol x min/L (white bread), P < 0.05
What it does to your health
- A meta-analysis of 9 longer trials found fiber-reformulated bread lowered LDL cholesterol by 6.2 mg/dL (0.16 mmol/L) and fasting glucose by 4 mg/dL (0.22 mmol/L) compared with control, with no effect on body weight or blood pressure. — 9 longer controlled trials of fiber-reformulated bread, some not randomized, within 45 studies of reformulated baked goods (n = 9 trials) Evidence B sourceLDL-C MD -6.2 mg/dL (95% CI -10 to -1.5; metric: -0.16 mmol/L, -0.27 to -0.04), glucose MD -4 mg/dL (95% CI -7 to -0.9; metric: -0.22 mmol/L, -0.39 to -0.05), total cholesterol MD -7.7 mg/dL (-0.20 mmol/L); acute postprandial glucose not reduced

Safety, limits and interactions
- A case report of a 2-year-old with banana anaphylaxis notes that the banana allergen thaumatin-like protein stays stable through digestion and heat treatment, which suggests baking may not remove it. — One child with anaphylaxis to banana, followed to age 9 (n = 1) Evidence D sourceSpecific IgE to banana 2.85 kUA/L, IgE binding compatible with Mus a 4; sensitization persisted
Who this works differently for
- In a 9-week crossover study in 21 preschoolers offered banana bread, pancakes and sandwiches, shaping the snacks did not change intake, and Asian children ate much less banana bread than the other two snacks. — Children aged 2 to 5 at a child care center, 9 weeks (n = 21) Evidence B sourceNo difference between shaped and normal snacks; children without a prior meal ate 84.1 calories more from snacks (p < 0.0001)
The bottom line
The flour decides a lot. In a single-blind crossover trial, banana bread made with whole yellow pea flour gave a glucose response of 97.9 mmol x min/L, under half the 218.1 of white bread. The abstract does not give the number of people, and the comparison was white bread rather than an ordinary wheat banana bread. Across 17 prospective cohorts with more than 875,000 people, refined grain intake, including sweet foods such as cakes and muffins, was not linked to cardiovascular disease (HR 1.08, 95% CI 0.99 to 1.18). That is observational, and banana bread was never counted on its own. In 21 preschoolers at one child care center over 9 weeks, cutting banana bread, pancakes and sandwiches into fun shapes did not change how much they ate. Children who had skipped the meal before ate 84.1 calories more from the snack. The one caution we can name is banana allergy. A case report of a 2-year-old with anaphylaxis to banana notes that the banana allergen thaumatin-like protein stays stable through digestion and heat, which the authors state from earlier work rather than measure. Baking may therefore not make banana bread safe for a child with that allergy. We found no card on pregnancy, kidney disease or medicines for banana bread.
