Does zinc interact with any medications?

Iron supplements of 25 mg or more taken at the same time as zinc can reduce zinc absorption.

What this means for you

The interaction people ask about is with iron, and it runs both ways at the level of timing rather than danger. An iron supplement of 25 mg or more taken at the same time as zinc reduces how much zinc you absorb. A few hours between them solves it.

Not for everyone. If you take zinc for weeks at a time, copper is the nutrient to watch. Zinc blocks its absorption, and the resulting deficiency shows up as anaemia and nerve symptoms that are easy to attribute to something else.

The bigger risk on this page is not another drug at all. It is the habit of taking 50 mg of zinc daily through the winter as an immune measure, which interferes with copper absorption, lowers HDL cholesterol and can reduce immune function. The upper limit is 40 mg a day, and lozenges at the start of a cold are meant to be a course of days rather than a season.

The product nobody counts as a supplement

Denture adhesive cream belongs on a page about interactions even though it is not a medicine. Somebody collected every published case of zinc wrecking the blood, 37 people across 34 papers between 1972 and 2025, and the zinc in them came from three places: supplements, swallowed coins, and denture cream used generously over months. Every one of those patients had low copper. Most of them recovered their blood counts within weeks to months once the zinc stopped and copper was replaced, and the nerve damage did not always follow.

The practical point is simple. If you use a lot of denture adhesive and you also take a zinc supplement, you are on two sources rather than one, and only one of them is printed on a label with a dose.

Food is the interaction people forget

Established. The biggest single thing that changes how much zinc you absorb is whether it arrives with a meal. In Nigerian children studied with tagged zinc, absorption was 16.2 per cent alongside a meal and 63.4 per cent without one. Nearly fourfold. Calcium in the same study behaved in the opposite way, 61.3 per cent with a meal against 27.8 without, which is why one rule cannot cover both.

Not for everyone. Do not read that as instructions to take zinc on an empty stomach. Zinc on an empty stomach is a well-known cause of nausea, and the measurements come from children under investigation for rickets rather than from adults taking a supplement by choice. What it does explain is why a zinc capsule swallowed with dinner delivers less than its label suggests. It also explains why the timing of zinc against other medicines, and against calcium, belongs to whoever prescribed them. It is not something to work out from a table.

On the lozenges themselves, the 2024 Cochrane review found treatment raised non-serious side effects by about a third: metallic taste, nausea, sometimes a blunted sense of smell. Intranasal zinc is a different matter and has been linked with lasting loss of smell, which is why the lozenge is the form with trial support and the spray is not. the review of both is here.

One product deserves a separate warning that has nothing to do with other drugs. Zinc sprayed into the nose was studied for colds and pooled across three trials with no significant benefit, and the reviewers concluded that unquantified concerns about permanent loss of smell may mean the question is never settled scientifically. The lozenge is the form with trial support behind it.

One legitimate medical use is worth separating from the rest. In seven studies of patients with pressure sores, zinc supplements improved healing by about 44 per cent against usual nutrition care. If a clinician has put you on zinc for a wound, the timing rules above still apply: keep it away from iron tablets and from tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics.

Written from the evidence cards and the data on this page, then checked back against the sources. Bioma Learn has no human medical reviewer at this time and we say so rather than invent one. Information, not medical advice. How we verify.

This page lists what the source says, and it is not a complete list of every interaction. Do not start, stop or change a medicine or a supplement because of a web page. Tell the person who prescribed it what you are taking.
